16 January 2006 The Maryhillbillys Release ‘Goddam He Thinks He’s Elvis’ Debut Single
The New Year gets off to a flying start when ‘Goddam He Thinks He’s Elvis’, the catchy debut CD single release from Glasgow/Melbourne country combo The MaryHillbillys is released on Luna Records on 9th January 2006.
The band will be flying in from Australia to promote the single with a whirlwind tour of the UK, including appearances at the prestigious Celtic Connections Festival in Glasgow, supporting Hayseed Dixie at The Garage, Glasgow, a performance at Dingwalls in London as well as a string of in-store performances at Beanscene coffee and music houses in Glasgow and Edinburgh.
Following hot on the heels of Goddam He Thinks He’s Elvis’, available via download through HMV, the band’s debut album, “Meet The Maryhillbillys”, is released on Luna on 6th February 2006.
As well as touring, The Maryhillbillys will be promoting both single and album through a string of radio sessions, including BBC Radio 2 The Janice Long Show, BBC Radio 2 The Johnnie Walker Drivetime Show on Monday 30 January and BBC Radio Kent The Dave Cash Show on Sunday 29 January.
Lead Maryhillbilly singer/songwriter Scott Richardson was born in Maryhill, Scotland in the mid 60s, spent the 80s bumming around Europe and the 90s apologising for his previous behaviour. Come 2001, it seemed the most logical option available was to shave his head, move to a different hemisphere and start a hillbilly band with a bunch of hard-drinking reprobates. Richardson found himself in Melbourne, Australia, established The Greyhound in St Kilda as his local watering hole and thereafter everything seemed to fall into place.
The Maryhillbillys were soon formed around a nucleus consisting of Dave Job (mandolin), Loff Kahans (fiddle) and Paddy Chong (double bass). It wasn’t long before Kim Volkman (dobro) and Steve Prictor (harmonica) also decided that this was the way forward and promptly jumped on the bandwagon. The gang was now complete and found a common brotherhood through a shared a love of country music, drinking beer and telling lies.
The combination of Richardson’s songwriting and some wide-eyed enthusiasm from the band resulted in “Meet The Maryhillbillys” - a debut CD that is not only a damn fine listen, but also captures the band as they like to be caught best – alive and well. If you enjoy the record, try to catch the band in person, kick off your heels and say hello – chances are they’ll buy you a beer.
